Discover the stunning National park of Peneda-Gerês!
On this route we cover a large part of the Peneda Gerês Natural Park, the only natural park in Portugal and considered as a World Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO. It is one of the greatest natural attractions in Portugal, due to its rare and impressive landscape beauty and its ecological, ethnographic value and the variety of fauna and flora. It extends from the Serra do Gerês, to the south, passing through the Serra da Peneda to the border with Spain.
Stage 1 - “Bike Test Viana do Castelo Loop”
Route: Viana do Castelo - Perre - Outeiro –Saim Bridge - Âncora - Viana - Feelviana
Distance: 49,5 km
Elevation gain: +440 meters
We welcome you with a short route on the area around the city of Viana do Castelo, the perfect chance for you to try your bike. Stop at Vila Praia de Âncora for a well-deserved coffee break by the Atlantic Ocean.
Stage 2 - “To Gerês”
Route: Viana do Castelo - Ponte de Lima - Ponte da Barca - Germil - Brufe - Vilarinho das Furnas - Caldas do Gerês
Distance: 95km
Elevation gain: +1555 meters
Leaving from the hotel, we will ride along the banks of the Lima River and head towards the beautiful towns of Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca. We will enter the Natural Park through the village of Germil, a typical mountain village that still preserves its authenticity and ride along the peaceful villages of Brufe and Vilarinho das Furnas. Our final stop is Caldas do Gerês.
Stage 3 - “Riding along the PNPG”
Route: Caldas de Geres - Portela do Homem - Lobios - Lindoso - Soajo - Mezio - Arcos de Valdevez
Distance: 68km
Elevation gain: +1360 meters
Leaving from Caldas do Gerês we will cross the border with Spain through Portela do Homem and the Mata de Albergaria with millenary oak trees and several small waterfalls. Mandatory Coffee Break stop at the Spanish hot springs in the town of Lobios.
Along this route you will visit the village of Soajo, where you can see the imposing espigueiros that were used to store cereals and the Mezio, one of the gates of the Natural Park.
Stage 4 - “Sistelo”
Route: Arcos de Valdevez - Sistelo - Monção - Extremo - Arcos de Valdevez
Distance: 79,5km
Elevation gain: +1020mt
On the 4th day we visit the village of Sistelo, known as the “Little Portuguese Tibet” due to its green terraces on the surrounding slopes. Then we enter the region of the Alvarinho autochthonous variety wine grape and ride for several kilometres along the river Minho and Spain.
After passing Alto do Mezio we descend about 15 kilometres to the hotel.
Stage 5 - “To Caminha and the Minho River mouth”
Route: Arcos de Valdevez - Paredes de Coura - Covas - Sopo - France - Vilar de Mouros - Caminha
Distance: 70km
Elevation gain: +1190 meters
This route begins with a long ascent until we reach the highest point of the Protected Area of Corno do Bico, where the three main rivers in this territory are born: the Coura, the Labruja and the Vez.
From Paredes de Coura we enter the N301, considered by many to be the most beautiful road in Alto Minho. In Sopo enjoy the view to the Amores island and Spain. The beautiful town of Vila Nova de Cerveira is right at your feet. To end this route, at the mouth of the Minho River, you will find Caminha.
Stage 6 - “Serra D'arga”
Route: Caminha - Vilar de Mouros - Covas - Arga de Cima - Dem- Montaria - Nogueira - Viana do Castelo - Feelviana
Distance: 71km
Elevation gain: +1100 meters
This package would be incomplete without a visit to the Serra Darga. To get there, we cycle along winding roads, through picturesque villages and mountain pastures where cows, goats and Garranos (an indigenous breed of horse) feed. At the mountain top you will find a unique landscape with low vegetation and granite.
